New Express Entry Priority Categories for 2026

In a strategic move to address critical labor shortages and strengthen the national economy, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC), has officially announced the 2026 Express Entry selection categories.

The updated strategy, part of Canada’s broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, focuses on shifting toward a more sustainable and high-skill-focused immigration model. By “taking back control” of intake levels, the government aims to prioritize those who can contribute to the workforce from day one.

What’s New for 2026?

The 2026 update introduces five new targeted categories designed to fill urgent gaps in the economy, defense, and innovation sectors:

  1. Foreign Medical Doctors with Canadian Experience: A dedicated pathway to help keep internationally trained doctors already working in Canada in the system.

  2. Researchers with Canadian Work Experience: Targeting PhDs and top-tier researchers to support Canada’s $1.7 billion innovation initiative.

  3. Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience: Focusing on leadership roles in finance, health, education, and construction.

  4. Transport Sector Professionals: Including pilots, aircraft mechanics, and inspectors to bolster supply chains.

  5. Skilled Military Recruits: A first-of-its-kind category for foreign military professionals (doctors, nurses, and pilots) recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Key Changes to Eligibility

Beyond the new categories, there are two major policy shifts that applicants need to be aware of:

Increased Work Experience: The eligibility requirement for category-based selection has been raised. Candidates now need 12 months of experience within the last three years (previously 6 months). This experience no longer needs to be continuous.

Occupational Removal: “Cooks” have been officially removed from the Trade category list for 2026.

Returning Priority Categories

While new streams are being added, IRCC will continue to hold draws for high-performing categories established in 2025:

French-Language Proficiency: Remains a top priority with a goal of reaching 12% Francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029.

Healthcare & Social Services: Including dentists, pharmacists, and psychologists.

STEM Occupations: Focused on AI, cybersecurity, and engineering.

Skilled Trades: Prioritizing carpenters, plumbers, and machinists to support housing infrastructure.

Education Occupations: Aimed at addressing the shortage of teachers and early childhood educators.

What This Means for You

If you are currently in the Express Entry pool or planning to apply, the focus has clearly shifted toward Canadian work experience and specialized skills. The first rounds of invitations for the new “Medical Doctors with Canadian Experience” category are expected to take place in the coming days. Additionally, Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draws will continue to be a primary vehicle for those already working in Canada.
